Lisa Egglestone - Aequora Home & Interiors

As an interior designer, I am often asked a multitude of questions about design, project planning, and overcoming renovation challenges. Today, I want to share some of the most commonly asked questions I receive, along with practical advice and solutions to help you navigate the world of interior design and avoid common interior design dilemmas.

Whether you're planning a renovation or facing a design dilemma, this blog post aims to provide valuable insights and guidance.

Question 1:

When is the best time to plan an interior design project?

One of the most frequent questions I am asked is about the ideal timing for starting an interior design project. The answer may vary depending on your specific circumstances, but generally, the best time to plan an interior design project and avoid dilemmas is before any construction or major renovations begin. By involving an interior designer early in the process, you can ensure that the design seamlessly integrates with the architectural and structural aspects of your space. Moreover, early involvement allows for better coordination between contractors and designers, saving you time and potential rework.

I collaborate closely with construction contractors and clients to ensure a seamless alignment at every phase of the project construction. This ensures that my interior designs harmoniously complement the envisioned spaces.

Question 2:

How to live through your renovation:

Living through a renovation can be challenging, but with careful planning and a few strategies, you can minimise the disruption and make the process more manageable. Here are some tips to help you live through your renovation:

How to live amongst a renovation

  1. Set up a temporary living space: Designate an area in your home where you can retreat during the renovation. This space should be comfortable and equipped with essential amenities to maintain a semblance of normalcy.

  2. Communicate with your contractor: Establish clear communication channels with your contractor to ensure that you are informed about the project's progress, any disruptions, and timelines. Regular updates will help you manage your expectations and make necessary adjustments.

  3. Protect your belongings: Before the renovation begins, take the time to pack and protect your belongings properly. Cover furniture, seal off rooms, and move fragile items to safe areas to prevent damage or unnecessary cleaning. If you haven't experienced a renovation project before, let me inform you in advance to brace yourself for the substantial amount of dust that will permeate every corner!

  4. Plan for meal preparation: If your kitchen is under renovation, set up a temporary cooking area or consider using pre-prepared meals or take away services. Having a plan in place for meals will reduce stress and ensure you're well-nourished during the renovation process.

Question 3:

How interior designers can add value to your renovation:

Interior designers play a crucial role in enhancing the value and success of a renovation project. Here are a few ways we can add value:

  1. Space optimisation: Interior designers possess the expertise to maximise the functionality and flow of your space. We can help you make the most of every square inch, ensuring efficient use of space and improved functionality.

  2. Aesthetics and cohesion: Designers have an eye for detail and a deep understanding of colour schemes, textures, and materials. We can create cohesive designs that align with your vision and bring out the best in your space, resulting in a harmonious and visually appealing outcome.

  3. Access to resources: Interior designers have access to a vast network of resources, including suppliers, contractors, and vendors. Our industry connections can help you secure high-quality materials and services at competitive prices, saving you time and effort.

  4. Budget management: Renovation projects often involve financial considerations. Interior designers can help you develop a realistic budget, prioritise spending, and make informed decisions to ensure your resources are used wisely.

Question 4:

How can you make open plan living feel inviting and intimate?

How to create designated areas
Open Plan Living Area

As open-plan living continues to be a popular lifestyle choice, I frequently encounter this question: How can one create an open space that still exudes a cosy and comfortable home environment? A valuable approach is to incorporate ample gentle background illumination in specific sections like table and floor lamps. Additionally, it's crucial to design smaller subsections within larger spaces to avoid a vast and hollow atmosphere. Incorporating comfortable furnishings and textures that engage your sense of touch will further enhance the allure of the space. It's essential not to overlook the walls - the inclusion of artwork can provide an additional dimension, resulting in a homier atmosphere in any dwelling.

Creating distinct zones within the interior to add depth is a crucial aspect to keep in mind. The arrangement and orientation of these zones should be sensible and well thought out. It is also advisable to arrange furniture in a manner that creates an inviting focal point within each grouping. In the case where the back of a sofa is visually unappealing or appears heavy in the middle of a room, a practical solution is to position an attractive console table behind it. This not only connects with the surrounding space but also serves as a surface for showcasing exquisite objects, adding an additional layer of beauty. In addition, I find it beneficial to incorporate an area rug in the primary seating area, as it not only defines a designated zone and seating arrangement but also introduces a touch of softness to the space.

So, there we have it - those are some of my suggestions for ensuring a seamless renovation, overcoming apprehensions about an open concept living area, and consulting with a professional in interior design.
